Twice a month, on the second Saturday and third Tuesday, we host a mobile food pantry where we distribute grocery carts full of food to families in need throughout Jackson county. Within Jackson county there are 8,900 people living under the food insecurity rate, and sadly, 4,400 of those are children. With the Feeding Jackson County mobile food pantry, we can feed up to 500 families per truck, providing 10-12 days worth of food.
Through a partnership with our local food bank, we purchase a 48-ft trailer that contains 30,000 pounds of food for just $800. The food that comes on the trailer varies with each load; it contains a variety of produce, meats, juice, canned goods, snacks, milk, and more. We do not know what is included until we unload it.
The Pendergrass Flea Market and Lanier Tech Commerce campus have graciously allowed us to use their parking lots so that we can distribute food each month. The Feeding Jackson County program runs on volunteers! Each truck needs at least 40 volunteers to help unload food, pack it into boxes, and distribute it to families.
